Access Level 0 - Frequently Asked Questions (General)

When I try to talk in #24, I get a message saying "Cannot send to channel", what's up? When an episode begins airing on TV, we moderate the channel. This means that only ops (@nick) and voices (+nick) are able to talk. The channel stays this way for about 24 hours to prevent spoiling.

Where can we talk about the currently airing, or recent episodes? Please join #24-east for this kind of discussion. Note that this channel is not very actively monitored.

Why am I banned? We have a zero-tolerance policy. Breaking of any rules will most likely result in a kick and ban.

How can I get unbanned? You can try to beg for mercy from the op that banned or kicked you. Depending on what rule you broke you may get lucky, however we typically do not give second chances.

Whats the deal with 24.S05E01.HDTV.XviD-XOR / 24.S05E01.HR.HDTV.AC3.5.1.XviD-CTU / 24.S05E01.720p.AC3.5.1.HDTV.XviD-DIMENSION? What does all that mean? Each 24 episode gets released 3 times :

24.S05E01.HDTV.XviD-XOR - This is 24, season 5, episode 1, capped from a high definition source, encoded in XviD, and released by the group XOR. HDTV episodes are ~350mb in size.

24.S05E01.HR.HDTV.AC3.5.1.XviD-CTU - This is 24, season 5, episode 1, capped at a higher video resolution with dolby digital 6-channel surround sound, encoded in XviD, and released by the group CTU. HR.HDTV episodes are ~700mb in size.

24.S05E01.720p.AC3.5.1.HDTV.XviD-DIMENSION - This is 24, season 5, episode 1, capped at the highest resolution possible (fox broadcasts 24 in 720p) with dolby digital 6-channel surround sound, encoded in XviD, and released by the group DIMENSION. 720P episodes are 1.4gb in size.

Some episodes have NUKED/REPACK/PROPER/INTERNAL labels. Can you.explain these?

NUKED - this means there was a problem with the episode - typically an encoding error - out of sync audio, missing audio/video, poor quality, glitches, etc. NUKED releases should be avoided.

REPACK - when an episode is NUKED, the release group has the opportunity to fix their mistakes and re-release a working version of the episode called a REPACK.

PROPER - the tv scene is fairly competetive, so if one groups release gets NUKED, another group can release a working version of the episode. (Similar to a REPACK, except that a PROPER is done by a different group).

INTERNAL - if a working episode has been released by a particular group, another group can choose to release their own version of the same episode anyway - they must label INTERNAL to show it's a dupe.

Whats the difference between the release groups? Does it really matter whos release I download?
HDTV:
XOR: quick to release, but they tend to sacrifice video/audio quality in favour of speed. decent quality releases with a FOX5 watermark in the lower right corner.
DIMENSION: releases are rare as they tend to leave HDTV to LOL or XOR. good quality releases with a FOX5 watermark in the lower right corner.
LOL: consistently fast, good quality releases with a FOX5 watermark in the lower right corner
Our preference: LOL > DIMENSION > XOR

HR.HDTV:
NBS: quick to release, but they tend to sacrifice video/audio quality in favour of speed. decent quality releases with either a GLOBAL watermark in the top right corner, or a FOX25 watermark in the lower right corner.
DIMENSION: releases are rare as they tend to leave HR.HDTV to NBS or CTU. good quality releases with a FOX5 watermark in the lower right corner.
CTU: slow to release, but they tend to sacrifice speed for video/audio quality. good quality releases with either no watermark, or a FOX5 watermark in the lower right corner.
Our preference: CTU > DIMENSION > NBS

720P:
BamHD: releases are rare as they tend to leave 720P to hV or DIMENSION. decent quality releases with a FOX5 watermark in the lower right corner.
hV: slow to release, but they tend to sacrifice speed for video/audio quality. good quality releases with a FOX2 watermark in the lower right corner.
DIMENSION: consistently fast, good quality releases with either no watermark, or a FOX5 watermark in the lower right corner.
Our preference: DIMENSION > hV > BamHD

What is a RAR file and why are there so many of them in each episode directory? Do I need to get them all?  RAR is a file format used for data compression and archiving - release groups package each episode into multiple 15mb or 20mb RAR files which, when combined together with an application like WinRAR, form a single AVI file. RAR files are numbered in sequence - .RAR is the first file, .r00 the second, .r01 the third, etc. You need to download every file - any missing or corrupt files will result in your episode being incomplete and unwatchable.

What are SFV and NFO files? SFV files are text files which, when run through an sfv-checking application like hkSFV (win) or cfv (*nix), allow you to verify that none of your RAR files are missing or corrupt.

NFO files are text files that contain information about the episode or release.

I have downloaded/extracted the AVI file - I try to watch it but get sound without video, or video without sound. What am I doing wrong? You need to make sure you have the correct codecs installed on your system -

Video: Every episode is encoded in XviD, so you need the Xvid codec from http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml
Sound: HR.HDTV and 720P episodes require an additional AC3 codec from http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

For windows users:

GSpot is a useful utility to determine what codecs you are mising. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

VLC is a media player that has built-in codecs. Although we don't recommend using codec packs or media players with built-in codecs, VLC tends to play things other applications won't.

Access Level 0 - Frequently Asked Questions (Sites)

Where do I get a list of the sites? Read the triggers section at the top of this page.

How should I access the FTP sites? Do I put the address into my web browser? Although you can access FTP sites through your web browser, we don't recommend it. Use a real FTP client.

Ok then, what FTP client should I use? Any client with decent queue support. Popular clients include: flashfxp/cuteftp (win), lftp/ncftp (*nix).

Some HTTP sites keep asking for a username and password even though I already entered the correct details. Whats up? This is a 'feature' of later versions of Internet Explorer - it removed support for URLs that contain a username and password. There are ways around it, but what the hell are you doing using Internet Explorer in the first place? Get firefox.

Some HTTP sites have lots of RAR files rather than a single AVI - how can I download them all without clicking on each one individually? Use an application or download manager that supports recursive downloads. Popular ones include: wget, curl, flashgot, etc.

Access Level 0 - Frequently Asked Qustions (Live Streams)

Where do I get the stream address? The stream address is made available in #24 approximately 10 minutes before each episode airs on FOX.

hat are the specs of the stream? Do I need a fast internet connection to be able to watch it? Technical specs are: NSV at ~450kbps, video: 480x288 @ 25fps, sound: AAC ~100kbps
For the best performance you need a connection with a download rate equal to or greater than that of the stream. A ~450kbps stream needs atleast 50K/sec for smooth playback. Anything slower than this and you'll experience constant buffering.

What software do I need? For windows users, we recommend winamp or vlc. For *nix users, we recommend mplayer or xmms.

I try to watch the stream in winamp but get sound without video. Help! Certain versions of winamp don't support streaming video. Unsupported versions are: anything below 5.0, and any version of winamp lite.

I opened the stream with winamp and I end up with multiple entries in the playlist. Does it matter which one I use? Each entry is a different stream mirror. Depending on how many mirrors we have each week, where they are located, and how many users are watching, you may find one mirror gives slightly better performance than the others.

The stream keeps buffering - can I fix this to get smoother playback?

Increase the size of your buffer:

In winamp: CTRL+P (or Options, Preferences), select Plugins, Input, Nullsoft NSV decoder, click the Configure button, change the settings as follows:
Buffer size: (stream) 30000ms, (Local File) 100ms
Prebuffer at start: (stream) 10000ms, (Local File) 100ms
Rebuffer on underrun: (stream) 10000ms, (Local File) 100ms
Precise seeking: (stream) enabled, (Local File) enabled

In mplayer: the default buffer size is 350K - change it to 1mb or greater:
mplayer -cache 1024 http://stream.address
